Dear Parents,
The Physical Education Team would like to provide you with some general information about our program as well as to inform you of our policies. Please read this letter and keep it on hand for future reference. If you have any questions after reading it, please call or email your child’s P.E. teacher at the middle school (610-869-3022).
I. Course Content:
Our Physical Education curriculum meets the following state standards: Physical Activity, and Concepts Principles and Strategies of Movement. Our program meets these standards through a variety of team sports (field hockey, flag football, soccer, volleyball, shuttleball, soft-touch hockey, basketball, indoor soccer, team handball, speedball, lacrosse, and ultimate Frisbee), fitness activities (jogging/stretching, tag games, tae-bo, circuits utilizing flex bands, medicine balls, dumbbells, and agility ladders, tug-o-war, ironman/woman challenges) and cooperative/problem solving activities (climbing wall, create-a-game, river crossing, “bag of toys”).
II. Grades: Grades are based on a 25-point scale. Points are earned in 6 categories. They include the following: (detailed rubric)
1. Preparation (5 points) The student must change into their P.E. clothes for every class. P.E. clothes consist of a T-shirt (NO SCOOP NECKS), shorts, socks and athletic shoes (no hiking boots). All P.E. clothes must meet the school dress code. In addition, P.E. clothes may not have buttons, zippers, side pockets or snaps and shirts must hang below the waistline when arms raised above the head. Examples of acceptable shorts include soccer, bike, cotton, sweatpants, cut-off sweatpants and mesh. For the reason of hygiene, students may not wear the same T-shirt and/or shorts that they have worn to school. If a student is unprepared they will receive a “ O ” for that day’s preparation grade. Three “ O’s ” in one marking period will result in an administrative detention.
Hair - For the safety of all of our students, any student with hair that obstructs their view when the head is tilted forward will be required to pull it back. We ask that it be “scrunchies” or head bands.
Jewelry – For the safety of all our students no jewelry may be worn during P.E. class.
2. Warm-up (5 points) Students will be graded on completeness and correctness of the warm up.
3. Demonstrated Behaviors (5 points) Students will be graded on participation, sportsmanship, cooperation with teacher and classmates, willingness to help/encourage others, ability to follow directions, meeting the P.E. personal challenge, and volunteering (i.e. demonstrating, assisting with equipment, responding to questions).
4. Fitness (3 points MP 1 & 4); (2 points MP 2 & 3) can be earned based upon their level of participation and degree of effort on fitness days. Two (2) other points can be earned by improving their level of fitness and/or their actual fitness level.
5. Game (3 points) Students may earn points based on their demonstration of lesson objectives/state standards on game days.
6. Written Quiz (2 points MP 1 & 4); (3 points MP 2 & 3) Students may earn points based on their demonstration of knowledge on state standards.

***A special note regarding P.E. grades and InTouch Online
Please note that PE grades are based on a 25 point scale. Therefore percentages for each grading category may appear quite low. Please focus on the letter grade for a more accurate representation of your child’s grade.
IV. Medical Excuses: Students who must miss a class for medical reasons must have a note from their parent/guardian that includes the following five items:
1. The date to be excused.
2. The reason for being excused.
3. The name of the child.
4. Parent/Guardian’s signature.
5. The school nurse’s signature.
All medical excuses must be recorded in the nurse’s office. The note must be taken to the nurse no later than 7:45 a.m. Failure to do so will result in a “ O ” for the preparation grade for that day.
Parent notes are only good for one day. If a student must miss 4 or more days, we ask that a doctor’s note be provided. Doctors’ notes must also be signed and recorded by our school nurse.
V. Locker Rooms: Your child will be provided with a lock and locker. No outside locks may be used. If a lock is lost, it must be replaced at a cost of $5.00. Listed below are items that you may want your child to keep in their gym locker. It is the student’s responsibility to secure and lock his/her locker both during and after each use of the locker room.
